In the field of visual understanding, texture representations, which aggregate local features into a full image representation, have a significant influence in a variety of applications. These applications include segmentation, retrieval, material recognition, texture tracking, object recognition, and face recognition. Texture characterization is not limited to a certain type of images, but can be used for a wide range of image types such as natural images, seismic images, fingerprint databases, and face datasets. To better address real-world applications, we mainly focus on studying handcrafted, interpretable models or deep learning-based techniques and designing discriminative, robust, and efficient texture representation approaches.
